Two gunmen 'carrying explosives' shot dead after opening fire at Texas art event that offered $10,000 prize for best caricature of the Prophet Muhammad

Two gunmen 'carrying explosives' attack anti-Muslim art contest in Texas: Suspects dead
The pair are said to have approached the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Dallas, where caricatures of the prophet were being displayed before they were gunned down. The building was placed on lockdown by a SWAT team with hundreds of attendees still inside after multiple gunshots were heard. The event was organized by the American Freedom Defense Initiative and had been described by opponents as an attack on Islam. The attack unfolded shortly after Dutch member of parliament and leader of the far-right Party for Freedom, Geert Wilders, had delivered his keynote speech.

A policeman keeps members of the audience inside the auditorium after the shots were fired. Two explosives were also said to have been left near the building
No one was allowed to leave as surrounding businesses, including a Wal-Mart and Taco Bell, were evacuated as authorities searched for two more devices.
Those inside started to sing patriotic songs, including the national anthem and God Bless America, and said a prayer for the injured security guard after one woman pulled out an American flag form her bag.
Two suspects pulled up in a vehicle with with explosives, before getting out and firing at the officer, identified in local reports as Bruce Joiner, who was employed by the independent school district. Mr Joiner was taken to hospital in a stable condition and was released later on Sunday evening.
The pair were then killed by Garland Police officers.
